Wholetime Crew Managers - Day Crewing Duty System

An opportunity has arisen for Crew Managers (CMs) to work at Garforth, Morley, Rawdon, Rothwell & Wetherby Fire Stations on the Day Crewing (DC) duty system within West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS). We are responsible for the county’s fire and rescue service, which serves a population of more than two million people spread over almost 800 square miles.  Fire cover is provided 24-hours a day, every day of the year.  We are an organisation where everyone is encouraged, trusted and supported to play their part in promoting safety and wellbeing across all communities in West Yorkshire.  The DC duty system is where DC staff members work a combination of positive and standby hours over a 24 hour period. Positive hours are worked on the fire station or appliance and standby hours are worked ‘on call’ from a residence within a 5 minute ‘turn in’ area of the station.

Therefore, staff members working the DC duty system are required to reside within a 5 minute turn in area of the station in either permanent or rented accommodation for which an additional allowance is payable to the staff member.

Applications are welcome from existing wholetime and Retained Duty System (RDS) CMs. These vacancies are for wholetime Crew Manager positions.

Eligibility

The following criteria must be satisfied to be eligible to apply:

  • be a wholetime/RDS substantive and competent CM (or above) in a UK Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Possess an IFE Level 3 Certificate in Fire Service Operations AND Level 3 Certificate in Fire Engineering and Science OR Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety OR equivalent relevant qualifications
  • have no current/outstanding development action plans, performance improvement action plans or capability issues related to competency.
  • be free of current formal disciplinary awards throughout the entire process.
  • have achieved a grade ‘A’ or ‘B’ score in your latest Personal Development Review (PDR) (internal only)

The selection process will comprise of:

Stage 1 – Identify potential via the PDR process (‘A’ or ‘B’ score) Internal only
Stage 2 - Completion of an online application form and subsequent shortlisting
Stage 3 - Presentation and Interview
Stage 4 – Operational Command Development/Assessment
Stage 5 – Pre-employment checks

Shortlisting

Following the closing date, submitted application forms will be forwarded to the Shortlisting Panel for consideration. All applicants will be advised via the e-recruitment system whether or not they have been successfully shortlisted.

Presentation and Interview

Applicants will be required to prepare a 10 minute presentation, of which the title will be given beforehand and a 45 minute interview. External candidates will be required to bring to the interview their training records and qualifications.

Operational Command Assessment

If you do not possess a 'Skills for Justice Initial Incident Command' qualification you will be required to undertake an assessment in to ensure you can work to WYFRS protocols. In addition as part of this qualification applicants will be expected to complete the Skills for Justice Knowledge and 'Understanding elements 1- 6' achieved through an E-Learning portfolio. Applicants that fail to complete the E-Learning portfolio in the permitted timescales will be removed from the process.

Please Note: Successful applicants will be contracted to the Day Crewing Duty System only on a permanent basis, and will only be able to transfer away from the DC duty system on promotion, exceptional circumstances or at the exigency of the service.

DC CMs receive the following remuneration package:

  • Basic CM salary
  • 5% of salary for the ‘on call’ element
  • Turnout and disturbance fees during standby hours
  • Compensatory grant of approximately £1000 paid per annum
  • Relocation package if you are moving in to the area
  • Fuel and light allowance, and rent allowance as per the DC policy
