Arts Council England is recruiting 5 new Members of the Designation Scheme Panel. Panel members support the decision-making process for Designation scheme applications, providing expert knowledge and advice and enabling a clear and coherent approach to decisions on application outcomes.

We are looking for experienced and collaborative people who have a breadth of perspective and a deep understanding of the public benefit of museum, library and archive collections.

Disabled, D/deaf and/or neurodivergent people, those from Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse backgrounds and people under 30 are under-represented in our panels and committees, so we particularly encourage applications from people in these groups.

The Designation Scheme

The Designation Scheme identifies the pre-eminent collections of national and international importance held in England’s non-national museums, libraries and archives, based on their quality and significance. These inspiring collections represent a vital part of our national cultural and artistic heritage.

The scheme was launched in 1997 and now recognises 140 collections held in museums, libraries and archives. It recognises that organisations with Designated collections care for a significant part of England’s cultural heritage and sets out to raise standards across the sector.

Arts Council England has recently implemented a new integrated approach to its Panels and Committees work, and as part of this, we are looking to recruit new members of the Panel to support these new ways of working and help us to develop the Designation scheme to ensure we are optimising its role and value to the sector.
