Hours: 37.5 hours per week any 5 days out of 7, as per the published rota, flexibility regarding hours will be required.  Additional hours will be required throughout the year and particularly during conference periods.
Holiday: Paid holidays will be 30 days per year plus bank holidays, some of these will have to be taken during the College closed periods, the remainder must be agreed with the Executive Head Chef.

Balliol College

Occupying an historic site in central Oxford, Balliol was founded in 1263 and is now one of the larger Oxford colleges, with approximately 380 undergraduates and a similar number of graduates in residence at any one time. The College takes academic work very seriously, but visitors are generally struck by the informal and friendly feel of the place. Balliol is a constituent college of the University of Oxford and employs some 80 fellows, 50 lecturers and around 180 non-academic staff with Dame Helen Ghosh as its current Master.

Job duties and responsibilities:  

The main duties are included below.  This is not an exhaustive list and may be amended in line with College needs.

 

Preparation of food according to directions, including:

 

  1. To follow the cleaning schedules for the kitchen and clean the section and other areas as directed.
  2. Collect and wash up pots and pans.
  3. Clean food preparation areas, floors and equipment, in addition to crockery and cutlery.
  4. Unload food and equipment deliveries.
  5. To ensure a high standard of personal hygiene, cleanliness and neatness ensuring full uniform is worn at all times
  6. To liaise and work harmoniously with the Hall and SCR staff
  7. To behave in an appropriate manner to all members of college, visitors and staff
  8. To play your part in providing a good working environment promoting a positive attitude in your work
  9. To comply with the food safety Act and general food Hygiene regulations
  10. To comply with Health & Safety Regulations, including COSHH, the correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all time, and fire precautions.
  11. To participate in any training to improve your standards of performance.
  12. To report any maintenance issues to the Executive Head Chef or the Second Chef immediately
  13. Be prepared to undertake further duties when necessary

 

The list represents the principal duties only of a Kitchen porter and flexibility and a willingness to help wherever required are both very important facet of the role. The Kitchen porter can call upon the Executive head chef to assist in resolving problems if in any doubt as to the course of action to take.
