Financial Controller

The Role

As the Financial Controller, you will support the Head of Finance by directly managing and developing the finance team to;

  • ensure the accurate and timely production of statutory and internal financial reporting, including consolidated accounts, and meet all external reporting requirements.
  • ensure robust financial controls are established and maintained across all finance-related activities and processes, addressing any weaknesses promptly.
  • manage and develop the finance team to achieve high performance and motivation, including overseeing the personal development process and setting objectives.

What you will be doing?

  • Take responsibility for managing the Finance Team and actively support the development of the department into a high performing, well-motivated team including the personal development process and setting objectives for team members.
  • Full responsibility for the Month End Close process and accurate and timely production of internal and statutory reporting, including analysis and commentary, keeping abreast of changes in reporting requirements.
  • Produce consolidated accounts for the Group, and bank or other external reporting as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for and manage the day-to-day accounting and finance related activities for all Group companies. Ensure appropriate processes and reviews are in place and operating effectively to ensure data integrity within the financial systems.
  • Work closely with sales and purchasing teams to ensure the accuracy and validity of data before it reaches Finance and minimise accounting adjustments.
  • Monitor cost levels within the business, providing budget holders with the information and support necessary to maintain appropriate cost control and be able to identify cost saving opportunities.
  • Maintain and promote robust financial controls across the business, being the point of reference on such matters. Where control weaknesses are identified, ensure these are addressed in a timely manner. This includes but is not limited to the purchase request process, expense claims and credit card usage.
  • Oversee outgoing payments ensuring appropriate levels of approval are in place.
  • Thorough and detailed monthly review of the balance sheet ensuring all accounts are reconciled prior to the release of company profitability reports.
  • Work closely with the Finance Manager to provide information for the cash flow forecast, tracking actual to forecast and improving on accuracy.
  • Understanding the ID facility and ensuring timely invoicing and reporting to the bank.
  • Effectively managing the credit control function, taking an active role to engage with other departments and customers on escalations.
  • Responsible for payroll related accounting and analysis including the payroll journal and accruals for commission. Ensure payments to HMRC are made on time and amounts are reconciled to the HMRC portal. Calculation of amounts due in relation to P11d benefits and PSA.
  • Work closely with the FP&A team on the annual budget process and help deliver the budget for approval by the board.
  • Take a lead on the company-wide system implementation project and support the team transition to new ways of working.
  • Ensure rebates are claimed on a timely and accurate basis, analyzing and forecasting as required.
  • Manage the annual external audit process across all group companies, taking a lead role in liaising with external auditors. Ensure adherence to group standards of statutory reporting including corporation tax. Ensure the annual audited accounts and corporation tax returns are completed and filed before the deadlines set by the Board.
  • Ensure full compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including corporation tax, VAT, and other related filings, and manage the annual external audit process.
  • Based on a thorough review and documentation of current processes, identify and implement any changes required to ensure the efficiency and accuracy of the day-to-day accounting and finance related activities of the business. Promote a culture of continuous improvement across the whole finance team.
  • Develop strong working relationships outside of the Finance team and across the business in order to improve communications and work collaboratively with other departments.
  • Assist with ad hoc project work and other tasks as necessary.

What is needed?

  • ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent and degree educated.
  • Post qualification experience encompassing all aspects of the role with a proven track record of success
  • Highly systems aware and able to investigate and manipulate complex data using pivot tables (essential). Advanced Excel
  • Excellent knowledge and hands on experience of finance practices, UK GAAP, FRS102 and tax
  • Strong people management skills, with the ability to motivate, develop and inspire individuals to work towards company, departmental and personal objectives
  • Understanding of invoice discounting, forward contracts and multi-currency environments
  • Experience of business process reviews and system implementation desirable
