Health Centre Nurse - 12 Month Fixed Term Contract
Overall Purpose
The Nurses primary responsibility is to ensure that they provide a friendly, sympathetic and caring environment for all pupils’ who visit the Health Centre. Working within a team of 7 nurses, 2 health care assistants and closely with the doctors from the Quarterjack Surgery, the Health Centre nurse will provide a clinically effective, high-quality service of medical care to boarding and day pupils, and first aid care to all members of the school community.
Duties
Professional
- Adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct and be conversant with the scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers.
- Use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high quality of nursing care to the pupils.
Nursing
Provide a high standard of nursing within NMC guidelines to pupils and first aid to members of staff and any visitors while on site. This will include:
- Organize and run nurse led clinics during span of duty (within agreed level of competence).
- Ensure care plans are developed and written for pupils requiring them, in liaison with pupils, parents, and boarding house staff.
- Provide first aid and emergency care and treatment as necessary.
- Manage the immediate care of pupils with sports injuries.
- Advise on common adolescent conditions such as acne, asthma, diabetes and eczema.
- Awareness of adolescent mental health issues including eating disorders.
- Provide a confidential counselling and health advice service as appropriate.
- Carry out child and adolescent surveillance programmes in conjunction with the rest of the nursing and medical team.
- Follow good practice and specific directives on immunisation procedures relevant to the School population and individuals.
- Operate procedures for control of infectious diseases.
- Follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.
- Be aware of recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
- Maintain treatment room stock, hygiene and tidiness.
- Organise doctors’ surgeries, including advising pupils to attend and referring to MO as appropriate.
- Arrange for boarding children to attend any medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary.
- Assess, implement and evaluate in-patient care of pupils admitted to Health Centre (within agreed levels of competence).
- Maintain safe storage, usage and disposal of medical drugs and supplies.
Health Education
- Promote health education throughout the School population.
- Keep up-to-date with current health promotion initiatives.
Administrative
- Maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and safely.
- Keep nursing records to a high standard ensuring the accurate and rapid retrieval of information.
- Record dispensing of drugs following drug protocols.
- Maintain general office procedures.
Health and Safety
- Have an involvement and awareness of health and safety issues within the School affecting staff, children or the environment.
- Keep records of reported accidents.
Liaison
- Work closely with other members of the Health Centre team to ensure seamless and continuous care, and with parents, academic staff, and School office staff and all other departments as necessary.
- Liaise with:
- Boarding and day house matrons.
- School health advisers and other members of the primary health care team.
- Doctors, Health Centre staff and pharmacy (as appropriate).
- Appointments and admission staff for consultants, orthodontics, dentist and opticians.
Knowledge / Experience
- Registered General Nurse (E)
- NMC Registration and Current PIN (E)
- Membership of the Royal College of Nursing (E)
- Current First Aid Certificate (D)
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience on the NMC Register (E)
- Experience in GP practice or educational establishment (D)
- Experience in sports injury, minor illness and injury, adolescent mental health, chronic disease management (eg asthma, eczema, diabetes, epilepsy, anaphylaxis) (D)
- An understanding of Child Protection procedures (E)
- IT Literate (E)
- Good administrative skills (E)
- Excellent organisational skills (E)
- Good team player and ability to work independently (E)
- Excellent time management skills (E)
- A friendly, caring and approachable manner, with the ability to communicate with pupils, colleagues and external bodies as required (E)
- Trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality (E)
