Creative Graduate Assistant

OVERALL PURPOSE

  • To assist in the Art Department staff in the running of the department
  • To help housemasters/mistresses and tutors in boarding houses
  • To assist with the co-curricular programme and weekend activities programme

This position is designed to allow a graduate who might be considering a teaching career in Art to further develop their artistic career and to also experience life in a boarding school as fully as possible. There may also be opportunity to coach sport.

The Art department is very well resourced with facilities that support working within a broad range of areas including Illustration, Fashion, Textiles (print, knit, stitch and mixed media) Ceramics, Photography (including a wet darkroom), 3d (wood and metal) Digital Media, Painting and Printmaking. We are keen to support a recent graduate wishing to develop their artistic career, whilst supporting the Art Department in maintaining its tradition of excellence.  There would be opportunities for the successful applicant to continue with their own work.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

To Assist in the Art Department (Academic)

Canford is a close and busy community, and we are keen that our Creative Graduate Assistant works with our pupils and staff to build connections between the Art School and wider school.

  • To assist the staff with the duties that arise in the day to day running of the department
  • To be involved in some of the regular duties of a teacher including preparing schemes of work, taking registers, reporting absences, report writing and ongoing appraisal, assessment marking, praise or sanctions
  • To maintain their own personal studio space
  • Contribute to our co-curricular offering (outdoor education, sport, performing arts) and tutoring.  

This position is designed to allow graduates who might be considering a teaching career to experience life in a boarding school as fully as possible.  Previous graduate assistants have gone on to positions in education both at Canford and other outstanding independent schools and state schools, both at home and abroad.

Applicants are not required to have prior teaching experience but an interest in education is beneficial.

To assist in a boarding house

  • To do some evening boarding house duties.

General

  • Graduate assistants may occasionally be asked to help supervise pupils on school trips and expeditions.
  • Graduate assistants would participate in the Canford Professional Development programme, sometimes being asked to deliver training.
  • All graduate assistants will be accommodated on-site, usually in shared accommodation.
