BSL/English Interpreter

Optimistic - Inclusive - Healthy - Innovative – Collaborative

We are recruiting a qualified BSL/English Interpreter to join our Deaf Access Team as a Community & Educational Interpreter.  The city of Derby has the 2nd largest Deaf population outside of London which means there is a high demand for BSL interpreters to support the local Deaf community in a variety of settings. At Derby College Group (DCG) we have over 40 Deaf students each academic year, who also require support.

The Role

This role includes lots of variety and you’ll be working with a wide range of people, from students to professionals in their workplace. You may be asked to attend a one-off appointment or be working with the same person on multiple occasions, in various settings such as hospitals, GP surgeries, offices and classrooms. Whilst you will be out in the community working with external customers, you will also be asked to support internal colleagues and higher education students. There are also other unique projects to get involved with, such as induction videos for students, and promoting Deaf Awareness Week to DCG colleagues in May.

The Team

This is a great opportunity to join the Deaf Access team which is small but mighty; providing an invaluable service for the local Deaf community, and generating important revenue for the College. The team provides regular interpreting services for a number of Deaf clients per week within education, business, medical and community settings across Derby, Derbyshire and the surrounding areas.

About you

To excel in this role, you’ll be a people person who enjoys working with a range of people and able to build rapport quickly. It’s important that you’re comfortable working alone, as well as part of a team. You’ll be qualified to Level 4/6 in BSL and have your interpreting qualification.  You will be expected to become NRCDP registered, if not already, and we will fund your initial & annual registration fees.

If you are newly qualified and/or have limited experience within any of the areas, don’t worry!  You will receive support from other qualified interpreters within the team and your line manager.
