About

Network Rail shares its expertise with the world’s rail owners and operators through Network Rail Consulting (NRC). We understand the institutional, regulatory, technical, policy and strategic issues of running a railway in the 21st century.

We know how to operate a network, manage its assets, and deliver renewal and enhancement programs whilst minimising the disruption to passenger and freight services.

What makes us different from other consultants is that our people have genuine hands-on experience in solving the challenges you face in the real world of rail operations. We are rail professionals operating and maintaining one of the world’s leading railway systems who want to share our expertise, experience, and passion for the job.

We have been active in the Australian, Canadian, Middle Eastern and United States markets since 2013 and have successfully delivered over 200 consultancy contracts for government, public and privately owned organisations, and for passenger and freight owners and operators, achieving consistently excellent levels of client satisfaction.

Our advice covers the full range of the project life cycle, from concept, project development and delivery through to operations and maintenance. Our work is driven forward by our values: agile, always safe, care about people, collaborative, impartial and passionate.

The Opportunity

Network Rail Consulting Canada is growing its Safety and Systems Assurance capability and is seeking System Safety / RAMS Engineers to join our Toronto team.

Canada is experiencing significant investment in passenger and freight rail, including corridor upgrades, electrification, signalling renewal, capacity expansion and new stations. These programmes are delivered alongside live rail operations and require strong system safety, RAMS and assurance capability to manage interface risk and support the safe introduction of change.

About the Role

As a System Safety / RAMS Engineer, you will be embedded within integrated delivery teams supporting major rail infrastructure and systems programmes.

You will work across the full project lifecycle - design, construction, testing, commissioning and operational readiness - providing practical system safety and RAMS input and supporting robust, evidence‑based assurance.

This role suits professionals who are comfortable working in complex, multidisciplinary rail environments and who can combine technical judgement with effective stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

System Safety and Assurance

  • Apply system safety and assurance processes across infrastructure and systems projects
  • Develop, manage and govern project and corridor‑level hazard logs
  • Lead or support multidisciplinary hazard identification and risk assessment workshops
  • Assess risks associated with temporary works, staged delivery and interim configurations
  • Support readiness‑to‑operate and entry‑into‑service assurance activities

RAMS

  • Apply RAMS principles using a lifecycle‑based approach (for example EN 50126‑style thinking)
  • Support preparation and review of safety risk assessments, reliability and availability considerations, and maintainability strategies
  • Ensure RAMS outcomes are traceable to hazards, mitigations and acceptance decisions

Design, Construction and Integration

  • Review design submissions, construction methods and commissioning plans from a system safety and RAMS perspective
  • Provide assurance input across signalling, traction power, track, stations, rolling stock interfaces and operational systems
  • Support configuration management and change control, ensuring safety impacts are understood and managed

Governance and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Engage with programme governance forums, safety panels and assurance reviews
  • Work closely with clients, designers, contractors, integrators and operators
  • Provide clear, pragmatic safety advice to project and programme leadership

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Proven experience in rail safety assurance, systems assurance or systems engineering
  • Experience working on major rail or transit infrastructure programmes
  • Knowledge of safety assurance processes, hazard management and risk assessment
  • Experience supporting or reviewing assurance frameworks, safety documentation or safety arguments
  • Familiarity with rail standards, governance and assurance arrangements
  • Experience working within integrated, multi‑agency project teams
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and client‑facing skills
  • Ability to communicate complex safety and technical issues clearly
  • Professional designation or accreditation (e.g. P.Eng or equivalent)
