About the role:

NRC Australia is seeking an experienced Safety and Systems Assurance Engineer to join our team in Sydney, supporting the transformative Digital Systems Program for our client, Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

Working collaboratively with the Safety and Systems Assurance Lead, this role will deliver the safety assurance framework for the program and support the development of a robust safety assurance process. The role will ensure that safety assurance activities fulfil project objectives while demonstrating compliance with governance expectations. The successful candidate will operate as part of a team to provide professional management and control of safety assurance, enabling the efficient and effective delivery of the program.

What you will be involved in:

  • Work with the Safety and Systems Assurance Lead to manage the safety assurance framework for the program.
  • Manage the hazard management process across the program.
  • Support the development of a safety assurance process that demonstrates all specified sub-systems are safe for operational use and that development is progressively assured to eliminate or reduce safety risks to as low as reasonably practicable.
  • Ensure all deliverables are created in line with the approved evidence-based framework through selective sampling and auditing of safety assurance outputs.
  • Verify that safety documentation and processes concerning engineering systems safety management, safety risk management, RAMS, qualitative risk assessment, safety case development, technical reports, safety processes, SIL determination and safety integrity are fit for purpose and readily available for audit.
  • Provide planning and execution of support services to other teams, ensuring specialist advice is available when required.
  • Produce demonstrable evidence that governance expectations set out by relevant standards and authorities are being adhered to.

Experience & Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Degree-qualified safety professional or equivalent demonstrable experience in System Assurance.
  • Strong background in railway projects, preferably experience with ETCS (European Train Control System) and associated standards.
  • Proven track record of delivering rail project safety cases to successful completion, on time and within budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders across multiple disciplines.
  • Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer or actively working towards Chartered status.
  • Well-developed report writing skills and ability to produce clear, evidence-based documentation.
  • Ability to prioritise work and deliver to tight deadlines under pressure.
  • Capability to promptly investigate safety-related issues and recommend corrective actions.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience of working in the rail sector
  • Experience in the implementation of modern signalling systems CBTC, ETCS
  • Affiliation with recognised professional body
