The secondment
How does it work?
During your time in Sydney, you will remain an employee of Network Rail. You may continue to contribute to the Railway Pension Scheme, if you are an existing member, and things like your continuous service history remain unbroken. You can also retain your safeguarded travel, if you have it.
You will leave your current job role to join us in Sydney. On you return to Network Rail, you will remain an employee of the company but will be unable to return to your previous role; we will help in finding a new suitable role for you.
We will obtain the appropriate visas, travel and residence documents for you and your family. We also do things like pay for your flights at the start and end of your assignment, help you to find somewhere to live, and provide a modest cash allowance to help you find your feet when you arrive.

About the role
Due to continued growth, we are hiring an experienced rail professional to join our team in NSW as an Associate Director for Telecommunications.
You will enable the delivery of new and existing client assignments throughout the state, consulting on systems engineering and systems integration activity generally related to the design, implementation, and maintenance of telecommunication systems ensuring safe and efficient train operations for our clients.
You will ideally have experience migrating GSM-R to FRMCS and integrating 5G technology, ensuring seamless transition and enhanced rail network communications through advanced connectivity and improved data transmission capabilities
Key Responsibilities
- Leading the telecommunications function within the business to meet client and business needs as part of the Systems Integration and Technical Services service line.
- Providing expert technical guidance and advice in the strategy development, planning, and implementation of radio telecommunications networks for signalling and train control to support safe and efficient operations.
- Managing client engagements and working within engineering teams in the delivery of projects to clients.
- Providing tailored advice to support the planning and implementation of DTRS upgrades on existing rail networks from GSM-R to FRMCS technology.
- Applying systems engineering and assurance practices to complex, safety-critical, socio-technical systems in the rail domain.
- Owning the completion of technical deliverables in accordance with the plan delegated by the project lead, ensuring the required quality level and compliance with governance requirements. Troubleshoot telecommunications and systems issues as required.
- Ensuring compliance with telecommunications and system engineering standards as required.
- Supporting, developing, and growing the business in all areas by assisting teams in the tender and sales activities, identifying opportunities for new or follow-on work, following up leads in areas of expertise, and fostering good relationships with existing clients and potential new clients.
- Maintaining a collaborative approach with clients and key stakeholders.
- Cultivating strong relationships with multi-disciplinary project teams, clients, and suppliers.
- Supporting business development activity by assisting in tender and sales activities, identifying new opportunities, and fostering good relationships with clients.
About you
We expect you to have the following types of skills and experience:
- Extensive experience working with radio and fixed telecoms systems on railway signalling projects.
- Background in delivering complex multi-disciplinary engineering programmes, including leading the telecommunications function and team.
- Experience in developing telecommunication strategies and solutions for digital signalling systems such as ETCS Level 2 and CBTC.
- Knowledge of FRMCS specifications.
- Relevant degree-level engineering qualification.
- Affiliation with a recognised professional body (e.g., Engineers Australia).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Attention to detail when listening to stakeholders (from many different disciplines) and capturing their thought processes.
- Ability to prioritise work and deliver to tight deadlines under pressure.
Although not essential, it would be an advantage if you had:
- Experience of developing FRMCS transition strategies and technical requirements.
- Demonstrable leadership and interpersonal skills appropriate to the position.
- Experience working as a management consultant in the rail industry.
- Knowledge/experience of working in the Australian rail industry.
- Independently recognised as an expert in their field (e.g., CEng, CPEng, RPEQ, etc.).
