General Manager


Overall Purpose

Our general manager is responsible for their cinema and team and drives their performance to achieve successful results, while also ensuring their cinema is the first choice for customers within their local market.

You’ll work closely with the senior leadership to ensure your business is set up for success, through team development, smooth operations, strategic decision making and by promoting a positive working culture and environment for your team and customers to enjoy. 

Alongside other stakeholders and peers in the business, you’ll regularly share ideas, results and wins and learns that will support our overall strategic business objectives and your own individual performance.

What Will I Be Doing?

  • Create and embed a positive working culture and lead by example by delivering a positive customer experience and by promoting an environment that values diversity and inclusion
  • Set individual objectives for the management team to deliver the cinema’s business plan and ensure objectives and KPIs are effectively communicated to the cinema team
  • Lead, manage and coach the team with regular on the spot feedback
  • Ensure that all incentive plans are fully communicated, carrying out regular progress updates with the management team to engage them in delivering targets
  • Conduct regular performance reviews (including probationary reviews) focusing on individual goals and objectives and development plans for areas of improvement. Upskill the management team to conduct performance reviews for the customer assistants
  • Recognise high performers and pro-actively support career development and progression opportunities
  • Effectively manage any underperformance by clearly addressing all issues with regular monitoring and reviews
  • Define the requirements of the team training plan and work with the management team to create a summary of training needs and align with succession planning
  • Source, interview and recruit new team members when necessary and be available to support other cinema recruitment when requested by the area manager
  • Produce a productive cinema roster that supports trading patterns and is cost effective 
  • Manage staff hours with our payroll system (PeopleXD)
  • Continually review and analyse cinema performance and P&L and define the appropriate strategic direction in collaboration with the area manager
  • Ensure screen content schedules are appropriate and match customer traffic demands, the customer demographic and liaise with the supporting departments on any appropriate strategic direction
  • Create an efficient operations system - High standards of housekeeping in the stock room and storage areas, stock that is maintained, rotated and can be easily located, retail offer is merchandised, replenished and aligned with business compliances and guidelines
  • Share knowledge and initiatives at area meetings that have improved cinema profitability, working practices, team development and operating standards
  • Track, manage and follow up cinema defect logs for site maintenance, ensuring a quick to react approach to avoid any long-term issues that could affect overall cinema performance
  • Establish a positive safety culture in the cinema ensuring compliance with all legal requirements, company policies and procedures that creates an environment that is clean, safe and welcoming for everyone
  • Manage general compliance such as fire evacuation, health & safety, replenishment of stock, audits, staff roster, screen checks and cleaning
  • Effectively communicate and delegate additional tasks to promote team development and productivity
  • Regularly attend training workshops and courses as organised by the business to continually develop and upskill your knowledge on the business and people management

 What Skills Do I Need?

  • Strong experience in a team leadership role in a customer facing environment
  • You're a brand ambassador and has a demonstrated history of delivering great customer service and empowering your team along the way
  • Strong business acumen and can confidently deliver forecasted targets, provide business reports to senior leadership and work at pace
  • Strong communication skills and have the confidence to coach your management team and effectively delegate tasks
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Significant experience in people management (e.g., employee relations, performance reviews, recruitment and payroll)
  • Proficient in IT (Excel, MS Office) and confident in using our cinema technology – Till points, ticket scanner etc.
  • Lead by example and treats your colleagues and customers with respect and is always approachable
  • A team player that supports your colleagues and peers with daily tasks
  • Shares a passion for the film and cinema industry
