Salary: £6,382 per annum (based on FTE £22,796)

Sports Centre Recreation Assistant

Overall Purpose

To work as part of a team under the general direction of a Team Leader and/or the Sports Centre Manager. The Recreation Assistant will assist with the day to day requirements of running a busy sports centre including the organisation, supervision and provision of equipment and facilities to support fitness classes, main hall activities, swimming and a range of other sports activities taking place at the centre.  In addition, as well as support for members and users of the sports centre, the Recreation Assistant will also be required to support the school curriculum.  The post-holder will develop into being a skilled and competent worker, with a strong work ethic and excellent customer service skills.

Duties

General

The core purpose of the Recreation Assistant is to support the Sports Centre Manager and his team in the efficient and professional operation of the Sports Centre for all school users (including parents, staff and pupils, external users including club members and any other members of the general public who may use the facilities) and to learn to carry out the duties of a Recreation Assistant in accordance with recognised industry standards.  The sports centre staff work closely with the teaching staff to ensure that the school’s games and physical education programme needs are met.

Key responsibilities include:

Under direction the Recreation Assistant will learn and carry out the following duties:

  • Pool supervision and lifeguard duties.  A current NPLQ is essential in order to carry out lifeguard duties.
  • Gym instruction for existing members, new members, pupils and staff
  • Reception duties as required
  • Administrative tasks as required
  • Ongoing maintenance and upkeep of sports centre facilities
  • Supervision of sports centre lets e.g. indoor athletics, football competitions, swimming parties etc.
  • Following procedures for opening and closing facility as required. 
  • Ongoing training and development.

Qualifications

The Recreation Assistant will have or be working towards achieving the following qualifications:

  • NPLQ (lifeguarding qualification)
  • NVQ Level 2 Sports & Recreation
  • Level 2 Gym Instruction qualification

Knowledge / Experience

  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (E)
  • Level 2 gym/fitness Qualification (D)
  • Previous experience of working in a sports centre (D)
  • Keen interest in sport (E)
