Archivist (Maternity Cover)

Overall Purpose

Canford is steeped in history, both in the material of the buildings and grounds and the history and legacy of the Guest family and associated users of the site prior to 1923.  In addition, during the last 90 plus years, Canford School has created its own history of past pupils, staff and other associates, all of which requires protection.

The Archivist will work report to the Librarian, working closely with the Development Office and with staff, pupils and Old Canfordians (members of the Canford Community) in respect of historical data and information and may be required to liaise with members of the public who have an interest in the School or its past.

Duties

Document Management

  • Cataloguing of existing archive material and any new accessions using Archive Manager software.
  • Appraisal of potential donations of material and processing and re-packaging of any new additions.
  • Seeking out and adding current school records to the archive.
  • Managing the preservation needs of the collections.

Outreach and Education

 

  • Delivering educational sessions to pupils throughout the year.
  • Creation and maintenance of permanent displays and temporary exhibitions.
  • Liaison with the Development Office and provision of archive material for Old Canfordian visits and events.
  • Liaison with the Marketing department and provision of archive material for promotional purposes.
  • Managing and writing articles for the new Canford Archives blog.
  • Researching and writing articles and providing images for Society Magazine (The Old Canfordian magazine) and other school publications.
  • Providing photographs and information for the Development department’s social media posts.

Enquiries

  • Answering enquiries from members of the general public, researchers, Old Canfordians, staff and pupils.
  • Undertaking research for members of staff.
  • Making the archives available to researchers by producing archive material for consultation, supervising its use and providing advice.

General Management

  • Ordering of materials and managing the archives budget.
  • Updating and maintaining existing Archive databases.

Digitisation

  • Undertaking phased digitisation of the photographic archive.
  • Management of the digital archive.
  • Managing phased external digitisation of the audio visual collection.

Knowledge / Experience

  • Honours degree in any subject or equivalent.  (D)
  • Previous experience of working in the Archive/Heritage sector, or a similar environment.  (D)
  • Previous experience of working in the education sector.  (D)
  • Familiarity with UK GDPR and intellectual property rights, as they apply to archives and data retention and storage guidelines.  (D)
  • Awareness of modern archive cataloguing and resource discovery techniques, and an understanding of how to put them into practice.  (D)
  • Competent IT user.  (E)
  • Willingness to use creative skills to put together Exhibitions.  (E)
