Deputy Press Secretary

The Conservative Party is seeking a Deputy Press Secretary to play a pivotal role in shaping and managing the public profile of the Party Leader. Working closely with the Official Spokesman, Press Secretary, and the wider CCHQ Communications team, you will ensure the Leader’s message is communicated clearly, consistently, and effectively across all media and digital platforms.

About the Role
This is a dynamic, fast-paced position that goes beyond the traditional 9–5 schedule. You will be at the heart of political communications, responding swiftly to emerging news and organisational priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Official Spokesman and Press Secretary in managing day-to-day media enquiries and requests for interviews, briefings, and statements.
  • Draft and edit press releases, quotes, Op Eds, briefing materials, and reactive lines in response to breaking news.
  • Work closely with CCHQ Communications to align messaging and support the drafting of social media content that reflects the Leader’s priorities and tone.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with national, regional, and specialist political journalists.
  • Support planning and delivery of media events, press conferences, interviews, and public appearances.
  • Monitor news agendas, political developments, and media narratives, providing timely analysis and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with policy, research, digital communications, and campaigning teams to ensure message discipline and alignment.
  • Support rapid rebuttal and crisis communications efforts where necessary.
  • Contribute to proactive media strategies promoting the Leader’s priorities and Conservative Party values.
  • Ensure all messaging reflects the Party’s strategic communications objectives and tone.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours as required.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with ad-hoc projects as required.
  • Ensure all content complies with electoral law, copyright regulations, and GDPR.
  • Provide holiday cover for other team members.
  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with key stakeholders.

Person Specification

  • Strong political and news judgment with a deep understanding of UK political and media environments.
  • Experience in Westminster, government communications, political newsrooms, or senior campaign roles.
  • Exceptional written skills with the ability to produce high-quality content at pace.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and confidence in briefing journalists.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Familiarity with digital media strategy and online engagement.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and team-oriented approach.
  • Professional, discreet, and committed to the values and aims of the Conservative Party.
