Graduate Network Engineer

We’re looking for a Graduate Network Engineer to join our Technical Operations Network team. Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, you’ll support the delivery, maintenance, and performance of Howdens’ network and hardware infrastructure, helping to keep our business connected and secure.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, contribute to large-scale projects, and build a solid foundation in enterprise networking.

This is a full time, permanent role based onsite at least 4 days per week from our office in Northampton.

What will I be doing as a Graduate Network Engineer.

  • Support the monitoring, maintenance, and improvement of our core network infrastructure — including firewalls, LAN/WAN, VPNs, and load balancing.
  • Assist with network performance monitoring and incident management, ensuring reliable connectivity across multiple sites.
  • Get exposure to automation and scripting, contributing to small-scale improvements and efficiency initiatives.
  • Support project delivery — from design and testing through to implementation and documentation.
  • Collaborate with teams across the UK and Europe to support rollouts, installations, and optimisation activities.

What we need from you

  • A degree (or equivalent) in IT, Computer Science, Networking, or a related field.
  • A basic understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, firewalls).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an eagerness to learn and grow.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • A proactive, curious attitude towards learning new technologies.
  • Desirable but not essential:
  • CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or similar certifications.
  • Exposure to Cisco ACI, Cisco DNA, or enterprise networking environments.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, PowerShell) or automation tools.

What we can offer you:

  • Competitive salary and annual company bonus
  • Excellent pension scheme (company contribution of up to 12%)
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays with the option to buy additional days
  • Staff Discount
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional Reward and Recognition events
