About

Network Rail shares its expertise with the world’s rail owners and operators through Network Rail Consulting (NRC). We understand the institutional, regulatory, technical, policy and strategic issues of running a railway in the 21st century.

We know how to operate a network, manage its assets, and deliver renewal and enhancement programs whilst minimising the disruption to passenger and freight services.

What makes us different from other consultants is that our people have genuine hands-on experience in solving the challenges you face in the real world of rail operations. We are rail professionals operating and maintaining one of the world’s leading railway systems who want to share our expertise, experience, and passion for the job.

We have been active in the Australian, Canadian, Middle Eastern and United States markets since 2013 and have successfully delivered over 200 consultancy contracts for government, public and privately owned organisations, and for passenger and freight owners and operators, achieving consistently excellent levels of client satisfaction.

Our advice covers the full range of the project life cycle, from concept, project development and delivery through to operations and maintenance. Our work is driven forward by our values: agile, always safe, care about people, collaborative, impartial and passionate.

The Opportunity

As part of our expanding presence in Canada, we are growing our consulting team in Toronto and are seeking experienced rail professionals to support the client programme across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

These roles are suited to professionals operating at Senior Consultant through to Associate Director level, with flexibility for outstanding candidates who bring strong rail project and delivery experience.

You will be embedded within one of the largest rail transformation programmes in North America, supporting the delivery of two‑way, all‑day service, enhanced network capacity, corridor electrification, and significant infrastructure upgrades across an operating commuter rail network.

The programme is already in delivery and involves close collaboration with the client, delivery partners, contractors, and public‑sector stakeholders to modernise rail services for the region.

We are particularly interested in candidates with practical rail infrastructure experience across disciplines including:

  • Track and Permanent Way
  • Signalling and Train Control
  • Ground and Environmental Engineering
  • Traction Power and Electrification
  • Rolling Stock and Vehicle Interfaces
  • Stations, Yards, Depots, and Buildings

About the Role

As a rail consultant, you will be embedded within an integrated project team, providing technical, operational, and advisory support across the lifecycle of a major rail program.

You will contribute to planning, design coordination, technical assurance, construction support, and interface management, working closely with client teams, delivery partners, and multidisciplinary engineering functions. The role requires strong technical judgement, an understanding of live railway environments, and the ability to work effectively within a complex, multi‑agency delivery model.

This is a hands‑on, collaborative role suited to professionals who enjoy solving real‑world rail challenges and influencing outcomes on a large‑scale commuter rail programme.

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience working on major rail or transit infrastructure programmes, ideally in live operating environments
  • Technical background in one or more rail engineering disciplines
  • Experience in consultancy, owner’s engineer, or technical advisory roles
  • Ability to contribute across design, construction, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness phases
  • Familiarity with North American rail standards, governance, and delivery models
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary and multi‑partner project teams
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and client‑facing capability
  • Clear, pragmatic communication of technical issues
  • Professional designation or accreditation (e.g. P.Eng or equivalent)
