School Physiotherapist (part time, term time)

Overall Purpose

The Physiotherapist’s primary responsibility will be to provide high standards of musculoskeletal physiotherapy care to both Canford pupils and sports centre customers. You will work with the Head of Physiotherapy Services and communicate closely with the Senior Health Centre Nurse, her team, the School Doctors and the Director of Sport to ensure that pupils receive a high standard of physiotherapy support and treatment. You will also work with the Sports Centre Manager to develop and deliver a physio clinic to members and sports centre visitors.

Ideally you will be a keen sportsperson and have excellent knowledge of a variety of sports related injuries and the treatments and rehabilitation necessary to support our adolescent sportsmen and women.  As the School’s Physiotherapist you will also be required to provide physiotherapy for other non-sports related conditions.

Usual working hours will be Tuesday and Thursdays. This role will include work with the School’s Sports Coaches and their teams at sports fixtures and events, so flexibility to work some weekends and out of term time will be required.

Duties

• The School Physio will be required to examine and diagnose injuries, plan treatment programmes, advise pupils/customers on injury prevention as well as on timescales for returning to sport after injury.
• The School Physio will also be involved in pupil rehabilitation from injury and will help patients of all levels to reach peak performance and recovery from illness.
• Will advise pupils on injury prevention as well as supporting staff to implement this.
• Will be required to manage their own caseload of sometimes complex patients, planning, prioritising effectively and organising own diary.
• Will be required to make adjustment to plans such as reorganising appointments for patients at short notice as situations change, recognising other school commitments.
• Be responsible for updating knowledge and practice in order to provide evidence-based care.
•  Will be required to communicate regularly with the Head of Physiotherapy Services, Health Centre, Director of Sport, parents and house staff but must ensure pupil and patient confidentiality at all times.
• Ensures that informed consent is sought and recorded from patients and where appropriate that of relatives and carers.
• The School Physio may be responsible for delivering some aspects of health education, teaching core movement patterns and flexibility management.
• Deliver health checks for sports centre members.
• Maintain comprehensive accurate electronic documentation and records in line with professional, GDPR regulations and school requirements.
• Evaluate the outcomes of treatment/interventions and provides timely discharge reports to relevant parties such as referrers.
• Be responsible for utilising the school’s resources efficiently and effectively, including access to the gym and swimming pool for the treatment of pupils.
• Make the sports centre manager aware of any equipment defects and highlight when supplies need replacing.
• Some pitch side cover during school games will be needed. 

Health and Safety

• Have an involvement and awareness of health and safety issues within the School affecting staff, pupils or the environment.
• Keep records of reported accidents via the Health and Safety manager.

Knowledge / Experience

• You will be a qualified chartered physiotherapist having completed a Health Profession Council accredited 3-4 year University based degree leading to a BSc in physiotherapy. 
• You must be registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CPS)
• A minimum of 2 yrs post graduate experience is preferred.  
• Experience of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, sports related injuries is essential, preferably with experience of high impact sports and of athletes working at a competitive standard.
• A complex understanding of the functions of the human body, especially in regard to the musculoskeletal system, the neurological system and the cardio respiratory system in children is essential.
• A sound knowledge of sports nutrition and strength and conditioning will also be required.
• Some experience in sports injuries, minor trauma, problems of adolescence and chronic disease management (eg: asthma, eczema, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies).
• You must have strong organisational skills and have a committed and dedicated approach.
• You must have the ability to build a professional and caring relationship with pupils, parents and members of staff.
• Flexible approach to work and time management.
• Good organisational and administrative skills are essential.
• Current First Aid certificate preferable.
• Willingness to attend appropriate ongoing training/updating and team meetings as necessary.
• Evidence of continuous professional development is required.
• You must have a keen and enthusiastic interest in sport.
• Experience of an Independent School would be advantageous as you would be expected to enjoy and embrace the challenges of this environment.
