General Counsel

We’re looking for a General Counsel to lead our legal and governance functions at an important time for Principality Building Society. This is a senior leadership role where you’ll provide clear, practical and trusted legal advice to our Chief Financial Officer, Executive Committee and Board, helping us make well-informed decisions that protect our members and support our long-term purpose.

You’ll play a key role in supporting strategic change, strengthening our governance, and ensuring our legal, regulatory and commercial frameworks remain fit for the future. You’ll also lead and develop colleagues across Legal and Governance, creating an inclusive, collaborative environment where people can do their best work.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide clear, balanced legal advice to senior leaders, the Executive Committee and the Board.
  • Help shape decisions on transformation, corporate structure, partnerships, outsourcing and operating model changes.
  • Oversee governance and company secretarial activity, supporting effective Board and committee operations.
  • Work closely with Risk and Compliance on regulatory matters, including PRA, FCA, SM&CR and Consumer Duty requirements.
  • Manage legal risk across disputes, investigations, regulatory enquiries and significant commercial matters.
  • Build positive relationships with internal stakeholders, regulators and external legal advisers.
  • Lead, support and develop the Legal and Governance teams, helping colleagues grow their capability and confidence.

What we’re looking for:

We know people can gain experience in different ways. If you meet most of the essentials below and are excited by the role, we’d encourage you to apply.

  • Qualified as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, with a current practising certificate.
  • Senior legal experience in financial services, ideally within banking, mutuals or building societies.
  • Strong understanding of UK financial services regulation and governance expectations.
  • Experience advising Boards, Executive teams or senior leaders on complex legal, governance or strategic matters.
  • Ability to explain complex legal and regulatory topics clearly to a range of audiences.
  • Sound judgement, with the confidence to provide constructive challenge and practical recommendations.
  • A collaborative leadership style and a commitment to developing inclusive, high-performing teams.

It would also be helpful if you have:

  • Knowledge of the Building Societies Act and the legal or constitutional features of mutual organisations.
  • Experience of mergers and acquisitions, transfers of engagements, major outsourcing arrangements or technology
